RYA Learn to Sail Courses

Here is a list of the learn to sail courses available in Western Australia. You can enter at any point in the RYA syllabus so if you have been sailing for a while talk to us about the most appropriate course for your needs. Some courses will require prior theory knowledge. RYA / Yachting Australia Sail Cruising Scheme

You can enter the RYA syllabus at any point depending on your skills and experience. Each course is carefully constructed to build on the previous course. All courses are available in Bunbury, Fremantle and Exmouth depending on season. Theory Courses are available in Perth and Bunbury

Start Yachting - 2 days $595

This is a two day program which aims to get you on the water and sailing a keel yacht. Join us on Saturday mornings and stay until Sunday. You will learn:

  • How to hoist and trim sails
  • Helm the yacht
  • Tack and gybe the yacht around a simple course
  • Use the compass
  • Learn about safety equipment a board
  • Learn basic knots and rope work
  • Have a lot of fun!!

Start Yachting assumes no prior knowledge of sailing. There is no need to do any pre reading or study

This course includes:

  • Breakfast and lunches. Dinner is available at local cafes / restaurants or bring your own and cook aboard
  • Your accommodation on either a Beneteau 411 or Jeanneau 37 Sun Odyssey including all linen and bedding
  • Start Yachting certificate

All you need to bring are a mix of warm and cool clothes. Courses run every weekend

Competent Crew - 5 days $1250
3 weekends - $1390

Competent crew is a course that assumes no prior knowledge. You will live aboard either over three weekends or a five day block and learn everything you need to be a useful member of the crew. you will be able to hoist and trim sails, reef sails, steer to a compass course use the engine and tie up the boat correctly at a berth. If you have completed Start Yachting you can do Competent Crew in three days

Recommended reading "Competent Crew" Royal Yachting Association. The cost of the book is AU $26.

This course covers:

  • Sorts out all the strange words about the parts of a yacht, her sails and rigging and the day to day sailing of her.
  • Using the sails including sail trim, hoisting and reefing.
  • Learn about the ropes and board, sailing knots and the use of cleats.
  • What to do in emergencies including man overboard, fire and other emergencies.
  • Know about all the safety equipment on board including flares, Epirbs and radio.
  • Understand the basic rules of the road.
  • Know how to use dinghies.
  • Understand how to obtain weather information.
  • Learn about steering and basic chart work.

This course includes:

  • RYA Log Book
  • All accommodation on board including, linen and bedding for six nights and five days (includes Sunday night and Friday night at no extra charge if required)
  • Meals from Monday to Friday which includes breakfast and lunch each day and four main meals

Courses held every week from Monday to Friday. Weekends available

Day Skipper - 5 days $1250
3 weekends $1390

Day Skipper practical aims to show you the practical side of coastal navigation. It assumes competent sailing ability and an understanding of the theory of navigation. The art and science of navigation is to go from point A to point B in the shortest reasonable time, safely and with a crew who will want to go sailing with you again. This is an ideal course if you want to build your knowledge about coastal cruising. The course involves passages to different ports and places as part of building cruising experience and will involve some night sailing at the instructors discretion.

This course covers:

  • Preparing the yacht for sea including all checks.
  • Take charge of berthing and un-berthing the yacht.
  • Practical navigation including electronic aids, visual fixes, DR and EP's, tidal heights and course to steer allowing for tidal drift, maintenance of navigational records and IALA bouyage. The Yacht has the latest in chart plotter technology combined with radar interface and autopilot - no other school in Australia offers this level of technology on a training yacht
  • Pilotage including preparation of pilotage plans, for entry into and departure from harbors, use of tranist and soundings, use of clearing and leading lines.
  • Rules of the road.
  • Engine management including checks and simple maintenance.
  • Taking charge in emergency situations including use of radio, man overboard, fire and distress flares.
  • Handling of the yacht under both power and sail including all aspects of berthing under power.
  • Sail trim.
  • Planning and executing a passage.
  • Log book.
  • Your accommodation and all meals on board for four nights and five days.

This course includes:

  • RYA Log Book
  • All accommodation on board including, linen and bedding for six nights and five days (includes Sunday night and Friday night at no extra charge if required)
  • Meals from Monday to Friday which includes breakfast and lunch each day and four main meals

Courses are available commencing every Monday to Friday and on weekends.
This is the minimum course requirement for chartering in Greece or Turkey

Coastal Skipper - 5 days $1250

Coastal Skipper takes you the next step and is for skippers who want to undertake longer passages or who may come up against heavy weather. You will learn the techniques to safely skipper a yacht by day or night for both offshore and coastal passages. You will be able to plan a passage that takes you into new ports. We will teach you how to manage when the weather takes a turn for the worse and how to stay independant and work in a sea man like manner. We go over heavy weather, restricted visibility, crew management in bad weather and vessel handling and how to keep the boat going when things break. On this course we assume sea rescue is not around the corner to tow you in. This is an advanced sailing program with a special focus on managing the crew as an effective skipper on long passages when bad weather can strike. It assumes sailing ability to Day Skipper standard and navigation and tidal theory to coastal skipper theory standard.

This course is a five day live aboard program. Once you have completed this course you will have an understanding of the skills needed to deal with unexpected and adverse situations on the water.

This course covers:

  • Passage making as a skipper-taking charge as an effective manager.
  • Yacht handling in confined spaces under power.
  • Yacht handling in confined spaces under sail.
  • Night pilotage..
  • Organisation of watches.
  • Berthing and un-berthing in various conditions of wind and tide.
  • Adverse weather conditions including preparation for heavy weather.
  • Sea survival, life raft and helicopter rescues.
  • Your accommodation and meals on board for four nights and five days.

The course includes:

  • RYA Log Book
  • All accommodation on board including, linen and bedding for six nights and five days (includes Sunday night and Friday night at no extra charge if required)
  • Meals from Monday to Friday which includes breakfast and lunch each day and four main meals

Yachtmaster Offshore Preparation - 5 days $1300

The Yachtmaster Offshore certificate is awarded following satisfactory completion of a practical sailing examination which will last between 8 and 12 hours for one candidate and 10 to 18 hours for two candidates. Qualifying sea time is 50 days which includes five days as skipper, 2500 sea miles, 5 passages over 60 miles, 2 overnight and 2 as skipper. Certification required before examination is a restricted VHF radio license and first aid certificate.

The certificate of competency is the premier qualification in the yachting world and a must if you want to work overseas on a commercial basis in the white yacht or mega yacht industry.

The yachtmaster preparation course is a great way to get ready for the exam. Over five days we will revise everything you need to be across and make sure you are really confident on vessel handling as well navigation and management of the yacht. You will go into the exam fully briefed and prepared.

Yachtmaster Examination $950 (Includes yacht and provisioning)

Once your ready we can arrange for your examination. The exam will take up to 12-14 hours per person and will include some night pilotage as well as a comprehensive assessment of your sailing skills and knowledge.
