Mile Builder Passage ProgramsWe can arrange mile building passages in either Western Australia, Queensland or Gibralter. The are designed to build skill levels and compliment our RYA sailing programs Mile building passages in Western Australia are included in fast track course fees. The aim is to give you a realisitc experience of cruising for extended periods. You will sleep on board and share in watch keeping, navigation and helming as well as learn how to keep a cruising yacht fully functional while on passage. On a typical trip to Shark Bay your first port will be Mandurah with some challenging entrance requirements to avoid the reef. This is a great port with water side cafes and fantastic fish and chips. After Mandurah we head to Fremantle, Western Australia's busiest port. Great options for night pilotage with the lights as well as the atmosphere of old fremantle to soak up. A sailing port since Western Australia was first settled it has heaps of places to visit. From here we may head across to Rottnest Island or up to Hillaries marina around the Marmion Marine Park. Jurien Bay is our next port of call 95 miles to the north. The Bay is protected but has many shallow areas. There are no channel marks so you have to use the leads to safely enter the marina. This is the beginning of remote area sailing where your navigation skills are really honed up.
From Geralton it is the long run to Steep Point. This gives you a taste for long distance coastal cruising on a 180 mile passage. We sail past the 200km Zutydorp Cliffs and enter the Shark Bay World Heritage Area at Blind Passage. There is only one port of refuge on the way so passage planning and self reliance become very important. Shark Bay is a sailing wonder land with crystal clear water, warm balmy evenings and great marine life. We head up the bay to the fishing village of Denham and around to Monkey Mia where the dolphins come to the beach to interact with visitors. It is an area where semi desert meets the Sea but has produced some of the most fantastic Australian bushland spots. All of these spots are on Google Earth.
